Now that a DUI conviction is made, what happens next? A DUI, or driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, is a serious matter. Aside from the fines and legal fees, there are other ways by which a DUI conviction can affect your life.

 

DUI class

One of the punishments that can be given is the required attendance to a DUI class. This is a defensive driving class. In a DUI class, behavior patterns on alcohol and drug consumption are established. A plan is also made to reduce the probability of repeating a DUI offense. DUI classes have varying lengths depending on the number of offenses. For example, a first-time offender can be required to attend 3 months of DUI classes, while repeat offenders are required to attend 18 months of DUI classes. Furthermore, you will be in charge of paying the fees for the DUI class.

 

Car insurance

A DUI conviction can greatly affect the type of car insurance that you must have. Once convicted with DUI, you will be required to get a costly high-risk insurance. This requirement has to be fulfilled for a specific number of years. This type of insurance is part of conditions for re-instatement of your driver's license.

 

Criminal records

Of course, a DUI conviction will appear in your criminal records. Even the simple filing of DUI charges will be mentioned in your criminal record. Even if you were acquitted of the charges, these will still be reflected in your criminal records.

 

Your criminal records can be a basis for a lot of things. For instance, some potential employees use criminal records in screening job applicants. Also, a DUI conviction in your home state or country can mean suspension of your driver's license in a different state or country.
